Participation of Smart Agriculture UGM Researchers at the International ISMAB 2024 Seminar

Bali, September 27, 2024 – The 11th International Symposium on Machinery and Mechatronics for Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering (ISMAB 2024) is a biennial international seminar organized by JSAM (Japanese Society of Agricultural Machinery and Food Engineers), KSAM (Korean Society for Agricultural Machinery), and CIAM (Chinese Institute of Agricultural Machinery, Taiwan), with full support from ISAE (Indonesian Society of Agricultural Engineering) as a member of ACABE (ASEAN Consortium on Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering). This year, the event was held in Indonesia, specifically at The Patra Bali Resort & Villas on September 27–29, 2024.
The seminar was attended by approximately 365 participants from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Indonesia, with a total of 291 symposium participants, including 173 oral presentations and 78 poster presentations. The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of agricultural engineering, particularly in developing countries where agricultural productivity is vital for economic growth and food security.
Smart Agriculture Research Center, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), participated actively in ISMAB by submitting two research papers. The topics presented covered various aspects of agricultural technology and its impact on sustainability, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices in agriculture to modernize irrigation. The paper titles are as follows:
- Development of a fuzzy logic-based automatic irrigation system utilizing hybrid moisture and environmental sensors for open field horticulture farming Researchers: Andri Prima Nugroho, Astriati Hamidah, Lilik Sutiarso, Sigit Supadmo Arif, Takashi Okayasu
- Design of a control system for physical model automatic gate controllers in open channel surface irrigation Researchers: Ardan Wiratmoko, Andri Prima Nugroho, Murtiningrum, Muhammad Farhan Hidayat, Rio Hatta Prayogi, Lilik Sutiarso, Sigit Supadmo Arif, Takashi Okayasu
The ISMAB symposium serves as a platform for benchmarking, networking, and sharing the latest research findings. Participants engaged in discussions about innovative agricultural technology, sustainable practices, and strategies to increase agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact. The exchange of ideas and experiences among researchers from various countries is essential for fostering collaboration and advancing the field of agricultural engineering.

In the context of sustainability, the symposium emphasized the role of agriculture in supporting sustainable practices. Researchers presented studies on sustainable agricultural practices, precision agriculture, and the use of renewable energy in agricultural operations. As the symposium concluded, participants expressed their commitment to continuing collaboration and knowledge sharing to address challenges facing the agricultural sector in developing countries. The success of ISMAB 2024 not only highlighted the achievements of Smart Agriculture Research Center UGM but also reinforced the importance of international cooperation in advancing agricultural productivity and sustainability.
